When Danni Sanders (Zoey Deutch) fakes a visit to Paris in the hopes of garnering more Instagram clout, she doesn’t notice how much it could spiral out of control. In Not Okay, writer-director Quinn Shephard takes us inside the attention-hungry, narcissistic hellscape of social media fame. It’s a darkish comedy with a twist, directed by a blazing expertise who made her debut at age 23 with competition favorite Blame, a modern take on Arthur Miller’s The Crucible that explored hefty themes with a sly humorousness.
This film is a satire of our culture’s obsession with celebrity and the ways by which we mistranslate real-life trauma into on-line virality and private adoration. Shephard shrewdly avoids a facile characterization of the “victim” as either the narcissistic fame seeker or the trolling, violence-threatening haters. Instead, she reveals a girl who's both.
Shephard makes certain that we’re by no means utterly on board with Danni, who's a shallow, self-centered opportunist who believes the world owes her everything.
